What is a Wedding Sand Ceremony?
A wedding sand ceremony, or unity sand ceremony as it is often called, either replaces or comes after the unity candle in a wedding and is a ceremony in which the bride and groom take turns pouring different colors of crystallized sand into a vase, often while reciting vows. The result of the sand ceremony is a vase of sand that contains a beautiful, shimmering pattern of interwoven colored sand, representing the mixing of two individuals into one entity. The vase then becomes a keepsake of the wedding ceremony and with the proper care can be kept for a lifetime.
A wedding sand ceremony can also include other family members, the purpose of which is to symbolize the blending of two families into a single, cohesive family unit. In this case, it is necessary to prepare more vases and a larger palette of colors.
Please be aware, however, that because the concept is so new, many religious organizations, including Christian churches, Catholic churches and churches or temples of other faiths, will not allow the sand ceremonies during the course of a wedding. Please check with your church before making this new and exciting ceremony a part of your wedding ritual.
What Is Required?
The ceremony requires at least three different colors of wedding sand, which are usually white and the colors of your wedding ceremony. The bride and groom should also have their own smaller vases in addition to the main nesting vase or container. There should also be additional vases available if other family members are involved. It would be best to prepare a small table at the altar beforehand, to provide an areafor the ceremony that would be visible to everyone in attendance.
